An introduction

"Welcome to our website! Our team of scientists at Queen Mary University of London, University of Glasgow and University of Nottingham has been awarded a £6.4 million research grant by the UK Research and Innovation Council, the EPSRC, on “Enabling Net Zero and the AI Revolution with Ultra-Low Energy 2D Materials and Devices (NEED2D).” We will address one of the most urgent, important and costly problems facing the world: the huge energy required to power the data centres needed to train and run AI-enabled computing.

Our vision is to develop energy efficient, atomically thin semiconductors to reduce by at least 90% the electricity demand from silicon transistors in data centres and high-performance computers. Our research is supported by over 20 industries, contributing a further £2.5 million. We will be developing our website as our research progresses. We welcome questions, however simple, from our readers, and we will answer the best of these on this website. Please ask your questions through our contact page."
