Since my PhD (1998) at the University of Rome "La Sapienza", appointments at the University of Nottingham and fellowships in the UK (EPSRC (2004-09) and Leverhulme Trust (2017-19)) and abroad (Chinese Academy of Sciences (2018-19)), my research has focussed on the science and technologies of quantum systems.

My present research on the quantum properties of 2D semiconducting metal chalcogenides has stimulated a surge of interest worldwide with discoveries ranging from new polymorphs (Adv. Func. Materials 2020) to tuneable band structures (Adv. Materials 2013, Nature Nano. 2017 and Nature Mat. 2020) and giant quantum Hall effects (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2017).

David is Professor of Advanced Semiconductors in the School of Engineering and lead of the Advanced Semiconductor Materials and Devices group. His research interests include:

• Wide Bandgap and Ultra-Wide Bandgap materials including GaN, AlGaN, Ga2O3, cubic boron-nitride and diamond. 
• III-V materials and devices for cryogenic electronics.
• High temperature and radiation-hard electronic devices and systems.
• 2D dichalcogenide materials for electronic devices.
• High frequency (RF) and high power semiconductor devices.
• Diamond Micro and Nano Electrical Mechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS)

Expertise: Developing materials for electronic devices such as LEDs, transistors and thermoelectric generators. The materials include organic semiconductors, carbon materials and halide perovskites, as well as self-assembled monolayers for the control of interfaces in devices. I have a particular interest in thermal measurements, controlling nanoscale morphology and self-assembly to tune functional properties.

Professor of Experimental Physics

Elena Besley obtained her PhD in Physics and Mathematics (2000) from St.Petersburg State University, Russia. In 2000 she held a Royal Society/NATO postdoctoral research fellowship at the Queen's University of Belfast. There followed postdoctoral research appointments in Chemistry at the Universities of Nottingham, Sussex and Cambridge. In 2007 Elena was awarded a Royal Society UK Relocation Fellowship and moved back to Nottingham. In 2007 she was a Visiting Academic Research Fellow at the Australian National University. Prof. E. Besley was awarded an EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellowship (2008-2014) and an ERC Consolidator Grant (2013-2018). She was appointed to a Lecturer in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry at Nottingham in 2011, followed by promotion to Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry in 2015. Prof. E. Besley is a co-director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Hydrogen (2019 - 2027).

The main area of my research during my employment at Nottingham is plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE) of group III-Nitrides. We have studied plasma-assisted MBE growth of GaAlInN layers of wurtzite and zinc-blende polytypes on different substrates, n-and p-doping of III-Nitrides, isoelectronic doping of III-Nitrides, superlattices and RTD structures in III-Nitrides. We discovered a novel method of growing cubic (zinc-blende) GaN using a co-impinging arsenic flux. We have shown for the first time that it is possible to use MBE to grow free-standing zinc-blende and wurtzite GaN and AlGaN layers for use as substrates. We have discovered amorphous GaNAs, GaNSb & GaNBi alloys, a new class of semiconductor materials for solar energy conversion. Recently, with the help of the EPSRC and support from the University of Nottingham we created the first UK MBE facility for the growth of graphene and boron nitride (BN) at extremely high epitaxial temperatures.

Dimitrios Papageorgiou studied Physics and Materials Science and obtained his PhD in Polymer Nanocomposites from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He then moved to The University of Manchester as a Research Associate working under the Graphene Flagship project, investigating the use of graphene and other 2D materials as reinforcements for multifunctional, polymer-based nanocomposites. He is currently a Reader in Functional Polymers and Composites at Queen Mary University of London.

I am a Postgraduate Research Student currently pursuing my PhD in Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. My academic journey is rooted in a deep fascination with physics and nanotechnology. I earned my Master of Science in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology with distinction, following a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Mumbai. 

My research expertise focuses on 2D materials, nanofabrication, and advanced instrumentation. I have had the privilege of contributing to the wider scientific community as a published author, co-authoring a book chapter on the electrochemical deposition of ferrites for the Royal Society of Chemistry. 

Complementing my research, teaching is a core passion of mine. At the University of Glasgow, I support undergraduate education as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, serving as a tutor, demonstrator, and mentor. Before this, I worked as a Physics Lecturer and Assistant Teacher in Mumbai, instructing higher secondary and university students in electronics, optics, and applied physics. Beyond the laboratory and classroom, I am deeply committed to community engagement. I work as a career guidance counsellor with the Ambedkar International Mission and frequently organise science exhibitions and annual fests to inspire the next generation of STEM enthusiasts.
